day 13 map

The aire is on two levels, we opted for the lower level. It is unusual as there is a woman there acting as warden, she's insistent that we all park our motorhomes so that we can drive forwards and out of the aire in case of emergency. She only speaks French, and at 'normal' speed, no concessions for us foreigners. It's a quiet place and the edge of a large forest, just on the edge of the town. Entry is via a barrier with a ticket machine where you pay for your stay, 4.50 euros for 24 hours. If you want to extend your stay you need to exit and then come back in and pay for another ticket. That's what we decided to do.

After a late breakfast we set off to follow the track up into the forest and hills beyond, it looks like we can take a circular walk. The route becomes very steep and emerges onto hills high above the town with good views. Layers of clothes are soon discarded due to the heat. There are a few birds about, chaffinch, long-tailed tits, magpie and wood pigeon, plus another unidentified bird that is the size of a great tit and has a crest, we would like to think it was a crested tit, but we can't claim that without a positive id. We also disturbed a snake, about 60 cm long that moved quickly off the dirt road as we approached. There was masses of rosemary, thyme and sage growing wild along the path. As lunchtime approached we assessed the situation, looking ahead we could see that the path made a long detour around the far edge of a deep valley, so decided that we would return by our outward route.

We had lunch then walked into the town where we discovered a Spar shop with a great selection of wines and an interesting town to browse around, before returning to the Hymer. It was a wonderfully sunny afternoon, people we still playing boule as we walked to the aire. Sat outside drinking wine and eating our starters until the sun sank below the trees and the temperature fell quickly so we retreated inside. Gill made a delicious meal that was a great end to a good day. No travel today so it was much more relaxing. By the time we go to bed there are 16 motorhomes on the aire, so it is almost full. Tomorrow we will be moving on.
